Wassily Szewczuk, born 9 Mar. 1908 in Ukraine, perished 3 Mar. 1945 during the bombing of the ship "SS Cap Arcona"

Wassily Szewczuk was of Jewish-Ukrainian extraction and was a private lecturer and language teacher by profession. In Sept. 1944 he was taken to Neuengamme concentration camp and was ultimately taken on board the ship "SS Cap Arcona” at the start of May 1945 which was docked in the bay of Lübeck and filled with concentration camp prisoners. He lost his life along with thousands of other prisoners during the bombing of the ship by the British Airforce (see the explanatory notes in the article on Th. Rehbehn).
