Hans August Neick * 1903

Erichstraße 18 (Hamburg-Mitte, St. Pauli)

1933 KZ Fuhlsbüttel
ermordet 19.07.1933

Hans August Neick, b. 1.23.1903, sent in 1933 to the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp, where he died on 7.19.1933

Erichstraße 18

There is little to say about the brief life of Hans August Neick, who was born on 23 January 1903, for he left scarcely any traces behind him. The Hamburg directories of the 1920s and 1930s have information about various persons by the name of Neick, who, it is highly probable, belonged to one family, since the family name Neick was quite rare, and even in present-day Hamburg the name is no longer found.

In the directory of 1913, under "Neick" appears only this entry: "Joh., stoker, Erichstrasse 37." In 1920 this person moved to Erichstrasse 26; two years later at this address there lived the "widow Joh." She moved around 1930 to Erichstrasse 18 into a rear courtyard dwelling. The directory of 1932 indicates that in this courtyard there lived with the widow Neick two further family members who were recorded as "workers" and were probably the sons of the widow: H. Neick and Hans Neick. At the old address Erichstrasse 26, there still lived the dock worker Otto Neick.

According to the entries for 1933, Hans Neick lived there as well as, presumably, his brother Otto and another worker by the name of Rich. Another presumed brother also lived in the courtyard at Erichstrasse 26, but in a separate dwelling. At Erichstrasse 18 in 1933 "H. Neick" was still listed; a year later, the entry "widow H. Neick" follows. Whether this widow was in fact formerly married to Hans Neick and now was married to H. Neick is no longer verifiable. The fact that Hans Neick died in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp on 19 July 1933 supports this supposition.

Hans Neick was a member of the German Communist Party (KPD), which immediately following the National Socialist takeover was outlawed. After the Reichstag Fire of 27 February 1933, persecution of the Communists was intensified; there followed mass arrests of Party functionaries and members. When the worker Hans Neick was sent to the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp is not known. He was, like most political prisoners, charged with "preparation of high treason." On 19 July 1933, he was murdered or hounded to death. On the same day two other members of the Communist Party also died.

Even if little can be discovered about Hans August Neick, with the laying of a commemorative stone at his address, at least his name can be lastingly remembered.
