Weidenallee 32

Bernhard Katz was born in the western German city of Nieheim. We don’t know when he went to Hamburg. He joined the local Jewish community on 5 Apr. 1937. He worked as a commercial clerk. His parents were Wolf and Lene (née Ries). Bernhard Katz married Martha, née Baumgarten, the daughter of Moses and Dorothea Baumgarten. They lived together with their son Willi and Bernhard’s two stepchildren, Hermann (born on 14 Feb. 1913) and Dora (born on 18 Sept. 1914), initially at Weidenallee 32.

In 1939 the couple moved to Kloksweg 1. They now lived alone or had at least two Jewish subtenants. Later the couple moved to Kleinen Schäferkamp 32, a "Jewish house". From Jan. 1941, the now 72-year-old Bernhard and 55-year-old Martha Katz lived off of welfare support from the Jewish community.

Due to Bernhard Katz’ age, he and Martha were at first deferred from the deportations, until the mass transports to Theresienstadt began. They were immediately deported there on the first one, Transport VI/1. On 21 Sept. 1942 they were taken to the Treblinka extermination camp and killed.

We do not know what fate was bestowed on their son Willi or their stepchildren.
