ERMORDET

Karl Samuel Stern, born 25.5.1898 in Berlin, deported on 14.4.1942 from Berlin to the Warsaw Ghetto

Alfredstraße 38 (Alfredstraße 37)

Karl Samuel Stern came from Berlin to Hamburg in February 1936, from where he moved to Cologne already the following year. He was the son of a dispatcher, Leonar Stern, and his wife Cäcilie, née Zondig, both were Jewish.

Karl Samuel Stern had remained single. When he joined the German-Israelite Community of Hamburg on February 14, 1936, he stated that he was a writer. However, no traces of his works could be found.

He initially lived as a subtenant at Alfredstraße 37 in Borgfelde with Arthur Holle, who ran a coffee mail-order business from there. After six months, he moved to Hammerbrookstraße 33 in St. Georg, where he lived, again as a subtenant, with the widowed dressmaker A. Piquard.

In 1937 Karl Samuel Stern went to Cologne and returned to Berlin at a date unknown to us.

His last trace is the deportation to the Warsaw ghetto on April 14, 1942 with a special transport of 70 people. This was part of a "normal" transport of 1000 people from Potsdam and Berlin.

On the transport list, Karl Samuel Stern is listed as a "draftsman," without an address. He was assigned to the transport as a prisoner fit for work from prison. There is no further information about his detention and his fate after his arrival in Warsaw. At that time he was 44 years old.

The Hamburg Memorial Book for the Jewish Nazi Victims still gives the transit camp Trawniki as the destination of the transport, as it is written on the file cover. In the meantime, the destination could be corrected.

Karl Samuel Stern lived at Alfredstraße 37, the Stolperstein was laid in front of the house opposite, No. 38, for technical reasons.
