Herbert Rothschild was a salesman by profession. His wife Ida was a half-Jew, a "Mischling" according to the Nazi racial criteria, who was herself treated as a Jew (Geltungsjüdin) because she had married a "Full Jew” (Volljude).
The childless couple lived as subtenants at "Rannestadt" in Besenbinderhof 40 from 1935 until their deportation to Riga in December 1941.
