Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital
In the former Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital, the National Socialists implemented their "euthanasia program" from the early 1940s.
Hildegard Thevs was able to research 33 names of murdered children.
A plaque on the building has commemorated the more than 50 murdered babies and children since 1999:
In this building
between 1941 and 1945
more than 50 handicapped children were killed.
An expert committee classified them
as "unworthy life" and assigned them
to be killed in specialized children's wards.
The Hamburg health administration
was involved in this.
Hamburg medical officers supervised
the admission and killing of the children.
Doctors of the children's hospital
carried them out.
None of those involved
was prosecuted for this.

Renate Müller, born on 5 May 1941 in Hamburg, murdered on 14 Feb. 1942
Renate Müller, the daughter of a merchant and his wife residing in Barmbek-Süd, was born on 5 May 1941. She was born suffering from hydrocephalus with paralysis of her lower limbs as well as from a fissure of the spinal cord.
On 8 August, she was admitted to what was then the Alsterdorf Asylum (Alsterdorfer Anstalten), where the fissure of the spinal cord was surgically corrected. Together with two other children, she was transferred on the orders of the "Reich Committee” ["for the Scientific Registering of Serious Hereditary and Congenital Illnesses”] ("Reichsausschuss” ["zur wissenschaftlichen Erfassung von erb- und anlagebedingten schweren Leiden”]) to the infant ward of the Rothenburgsort Children’s Hospital after its reopening (having been closed due to the bombing damage on 30 June 1941) on 23 December 1941.
The "Alsterdorf” head nurse Schröder remembered in 1948 that Renate’s parents preferred the non-public Rothenburgsort Children’s Hospital to the "children’s special ward” at the state-operated Langenhorn "sanatorium and nursing home” (Heil- und Pflegeanstalt Langenhorn).
The infant ward was headed by Helene Sonnemann, the deputy of Wilhelm Bayer. She administered the Phenobarbital (Luminal) injection to Renate.
Renate died on 14 Feb. 1942 at 7 o’clock in the evening, not even nine months old. Two days later, her mother gave notification to the relevant records office, where "hydrocephalus” was entered as the cause of death, whereas the death certificate listed in more detail "hydrocephalus, bronchial pneumonia, and circulatory weakness.”
Renate Müller was also the name of a well-known actress, which is why the infant stuck in one nurse’s memory, while other nurses and midwives later did not remember the names but only the disabilities.
