Elfriede Barabanowa, born on 13.5.1943 in Hamburg, died on 28.7.1944

Essener Straße 54 (formerly camp Tannenkoppel, Weg 4, also called "Tarpenbek = Forced labor camp of the armaments industry in Hamburg Langenhorn)

Elfriede Barabanowa was born in Hamburg on May 13, 1943. Her mother Anna Barabanowa, born on October 18, 1924 in Vinogradovka, was single. Deported from her native Russia, she had to perform forced labor for the Hanseatisches Kettenwerk GmbH (HAK) in Hamburg-Langenhorn since November 30, 1942. She was housed in the "Ostarbeiterlager" Tannenkoppel, Weg 4, and was pregnant during this time.

On the day of the birth of her child, 18-year-old Anna Barabanowa was admitted to the Finkenau Women's Clinic, Hamburg-Uhlenhorst. Nine days after the birth, on May 22, 1943, she returned to the Tannenkoppel camp with her daughter Elfriede. There Elfriede had to spend the short time of her life.

On March 20, 1944, she was admitted to the Langenhorn General Hospital with the diagnosis "umbilical hernia." A month later, on April 21, 1944, she was returned to the forced labor camp Tannenkoppel. The nutritional and living conditions there were completely inadequate for her.

After three months, on July 28, 1944, Elfriede died there at 3:00 o’ clock. In the death notice of the police chief, signed "i. A. Behrmann L. A.", after "official investigation" and without naming a doctor, the cause of death is given as "suffocation in the act of vomiting". The information given in the death notice was provided verbally by Paul Schwan, an employee of the Hamburg employment office.

Under the heading "Father," the information "Ivan Barabanov, alive, Eastern worker, place of residence as above" has been crossed out. The reason for the deletion could not be clarified so far.

Elfriede was 1 year, 2 months and 15 days old.

Ten days after Elfriede's death her burial took place on August 7, 1944 at the Ohlsdorf cemetery, grave location: Bo 63, row 33, no. 7. Her grave is no longer preserved. At the end of 1959 it was dissolved together with at least 30 graves of children of forced laborers on area Bo 63.
