Walter Dobbeck, born on 1 Dec. 1920 in Hamburg, suicide on 1 Dec. 1937 in Hamburg

Billhorner Röhrendamm 120 (Billhorner Röhrendamm 142)

The authors learned about Walter Dobbeck’s fate only by evaluating cross-references from criminal case records of other persecuted homosexuals, since the investigation files of the Hamburg Criminal Investigation Department and the Gestapo were not preserved.

The commercial apprentice Walter Dobbeck was born on 1 Dec. 1920 in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort at Marckmannstrasse 158. He was the son of the farmer August Dobbeck, who worked in Blankenese as a domestic servant, and his wife Frieda, née Pasche, a cabinetmaker’s daughter from Wittenberge. The father, August Dobbeck, later earned a living at the Nordelbe Gaswerke, a gas plant, and lived with his family in the shadow of the gasometer, measuring 108 meters (118 yds.) in height, at the end of Marckmannstrasse. In 1937, Walter Dobbeck was entangled in the trial against a friend, employed as a resident physician at the Altona Women’s Hospital, for offenses pursuant to Sec. 175 of the Reich Criminal Code (Reichsstrafgesetzbuch – RStGB). That was also the reason for his suicide: On 1 Dec. 1937, Walter Dobbeck died on his seventeenth birthday of self-inflicted arsenic poisoning in the St. Georg Hospital. He is one of the youngest victims of persecution against homosexuals in Hamburg.

Walter Dobbeck had lived with his parents in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort at Billhorner Röhrendamm 142 on the fifth floor. At the place where his parental home used to be a Stolperstein commemorates his fate.
