Hugo Frank‘s parents were the journeyman coppersmith Moritz Frank, born 3 January 1857 in what was then Reimlich near Neutitschein (Austria-Hungary), today Rybi in Moravia (Czech Republic), and his wife Hulda, née Cos(s)mann. The family settled in Recklinghausen and then, in June1895, moved to Adlerstrasse in Dortmund. Hugo Frank’s life - his schooling, whether he completed some sort of training, and where he worked - all this remains unknown. It is only in August 1939 that we again find traces of him, when he moved from Essen to Hamburg. He lived there at Sulzfelder Strasse 30, later as a sub-lessee with Pineus at Grindelallee 138. He was unmarried and had no children. On his Communal Religion Tax record for the Hamburg Jewish Congregation he is entered as "deist” - a National Socialist category, according to the decree of 26 November 1936, for all those who had withdrawn from a religious community but who were not non-believers.

On 25 October 1941, Hugo Frank was deported to the Lodz/Litzmannstadt ghetto and perished there.
