Alfred Eduard Lion was born as the son of the bank clerk Frederik Eugen Lion and his wife Leonore, née Guttmann. Alfred Lion, who had a younger brother named Edgar Leopold (*07/04/1887), worked as a merchant in Hermannstrasse in downtown Hamburg. It is documented that the Lion brothers owned equal shares of a property in Böttgerstrasse 8 in Hamburg. On June 2nd, 1938, both brothers appeared before the notary public Arthur Köpke at Grosse Bergstrasse 262 in Hamburg-Altona to transfer their property to Edgar Lion’s non-Jewish wife. At the time, Edgar Lion and his wife Risa Louise Lion, née Röhlig, were in the midst of divorce proceedings.

Instead of the usual alimony to be paid to the divorced wife, a capital settlement was agreed on, "because Edgar Lion was Jewish and intended to move his permanent residence abroad.” According to the files, Edgar Lion was no longer interested in the property because his share at the time was already substantially mortgaged. Besides the mortgage of 14,700 RM on the whole property, Edgar’s share was additionally mortgaged with 9,250 RM.

With the exception of the basement apartment of Böttgerstrasse 8, where Alfred and Edgar lived, all apartments in the building were rented out. In the contract, the Lion brothers committed themselves to vacate their flat until April 1st, 1939 at the latest.

After he had become impoverished, Alfred Lion moved from Schrammsweg 10 in Hamburg-Eppendorf to Grindelberg 5 with the Nachum family.

According to the tax files of the Jewish Community, Alfred Lion had left the Community in 1915 and was re-admitted in 1938. Due to the forced contributions, e.g. the levy on Jewish assets, imposed on all Jewish citizens, Alfred Lion’s assets by 1941 had diminished to the extent that he was considered penniless and was exempt from paying to the Jewish Community.

Lotte Strelitz, born May 2nd, 1908 in Hamburg, worked as a housemaid for the Markus family at Werderstrasse 18. She married Alfred Lion on November 6th, 1941, two days before his deportation to Minsk. In order to accompany him on this voyage, she voluntarily registered and was entered into the deportation list as number 858, still under the name of Lotte Strelitz. Alfred and Lotte Lion were deported to the Minsk ghetto, where they both perished. Edgar Leopold Lion died in the Riga ghetto.
