David Philip was born as the son of the music teacher Philipp Sally Philip (born on 21 Mar. 1867 in Hamburg) and his wife Rahel, née Levisohn (born on 30 Apr. 1865). He had three brothers (Alexander, born on 19 Aug. 1893; Max, born on 1 Apr. 1895; and Siegfried, born on 17 July 1898) as well as one sister (Martha, married name Brauer, born on 23 Oct. 1900). His brothers Alexander and Max died in the First World War. Possibly, this was also true for Siegfried, of whom no documents other than his birth certificate could be found. Sister Martha survived the Holocaust. She married Kurt Brauer (born on 19 July 1893, died on 30 Jan. 1964) and emigrated with him and four children to Argentina.

Philipp Sally Philip lived with his family in Eilbek at Hammer Steindamm 3 in the 1890s. In 1898, when son Siegfried was born, they lived at Rückertstrasse 1. Toward the end of the 1920s, he could no longer make a living from his income, although he continued to work as a music teacher and director of four choirs. At least temporarily, he received welfare assistance since then. Around 1938, he moved to the retirement home of the Jewish Community at Sedanstrasse 23. At that time, he was already a widower. His life ended in an Altona "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Grünestrasse 5, where he died on 4 Jan. 1942.

His son David was a commercial clerk (sales assistant) by profession. He worked temporarily at the Karstadt department store, later for several years at the L. Wagner Company, a store selling dry goods, linens and clothing, as well as toys and stationery at Elbstrasse 70-86 (today Neanderstrasse) in Hamburg-Neustadt. After marrying Bella, née Aron, they both lived in the apartment of his widowed mother-in-law at Grindelallee 153 on the third floor. On 29 Oct. 1921, their daughter Senta was born. The family probably moved to Rutschbahn 19 at the end of the 1920s and to Grindelhof 68 on the third floor in 1935. The Wagner Company was "Aryanized” in the late 1930s and David Philip lost his job. From 1939 onward, he was considered destitute, receiving welfare support for himself and his family. In connection with his lack of means, it was noted on his Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) file card that he was also "suffering from kidney disease.”

Daughter Senta had temporarily moved out of the family apartment at Grindelhof 68. Around 1940, she probably lived at Rothenbaumchaussee 217. Whether the house was already a "Jews’ house” at that time is unclear. At any rate, Senta returned to stay with her parents. She probably had no job, because in about 1940/41 she did not pay any taxes to the Jewish Religious Organization (Jüdischer Religionsverband). On 17 June 1941, her son Denny was born as an illegitimate child, and on 6 December, David and Bella Philip were deported with their daughter Senta and baby Denny to Riga-Jungfernhof, from where they did not return. Their household effects were auctioned off in Feb. 1942 to the benefit of the German Reich.
