Ferdinand Hertz, born on 7 Nov. 1861 in Elmshorn, deported on 15 July 1942 to Theresienstadt, died there on 28 July 1942

Ferdinand Hertz was a commercial representative by occupation, and he owned his own company, which in 1906 had been entered in the company register as an agency for decorative fabrics.

He was married and had five children, of whom at least four managed to save their lives by emigrating on time. His wife Martha passed away in May 1934.

After her death, Ferdinand Hertz probably moved out of the apartment on Isestrasse. In 1933, he was still listed there in the directory. After 1943, he moved at least four times until he was quartered in the "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Dillstrasse 15 in Mar. 1942.

His revenues steadily declined since 1934. On 1 Jan. 1939, the business was struck from the company register. He was not allowed to dispose freely of his remaining assets but instead was allocated money for his livelihood on a monthly basis. At Dillstrasse, on 15 July 1942, the 80-year-old man received the deportation order to Theresienstadt, where he died after less than two weeks.
