Euphrosine Marie Jaques was born in Hamburg on 26 Aug. 1871. Her parents were Ernst Jaques and Anna, née Asser. Euphrosine, baptized a Protestant, remained unmarried. As a Christian, she was registered by the Jewish Community for the first time at the end of 1940. In the fall of 1940, she indicated her assets as amounting to 8,765 RM (reichsmark): 1,165 RM in cash and 7,600 RM in bonds. Her account had been blocked by the then usual "security order” ("Sicherungsanordnung"), and she was permitted to have only 140 RM paid out per month: 40 RM for renting a room, 70 RM for living expenses, and 30 RM for "other.” By then, she no longer lived in a residence of her own choosing but in a "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Haynstrasse 7.

On 1 Oct. 1940, she moved to Haynstrasse 29 to live with the Jewish Freund family in their ground-floor apartment, which at times also accommodated other persecuted persons, of whom the following are known to us by name: Bertha Alexander, Agnes and Siegfried Freundlich, as well as Hedwig Rosskamm. On orders of the Gestapo, the Jewish Community disposed of this private apartment like a "Jews’ house.” Later, Euphrosine Jaques was forced to move to the "Jews’ house” at Bogenstrasse 27.

There, she spent 4,962.50 RM in bonds, probably all that was left of her assets, on one of the "home purchase contracts” ("Heimeinkaufsverträge”), i.e., for the "right” to receive room and board in the Theresienstadt Ghetto "free of charge.”

Eventually, she was deported there on 15 July 1942. Four of the fellow occupants from Haynstrasse 29 went there with her. The others had already been deported to Lodz (Litzmannstadt) on 25 Oct. 1941. All of them perished, Euphrosine Jaques on 28 Jan. 1944, at the age of 73.
