Alfred Ernst Wilhelm Alward, born 25 July 1885, imprisoned October 1941, died 15 Dec. 1942 in the Neuengamme Concentration Camp

The deckhand and factory worker Alfred Alward was originally from Schwerin. His police record shows 21 counts of theft, fraud, and lottery scams. It was in particular during the "bad times” that he tried to provide for himself and his wife in this way. The couple divorced in 1924. In 1925 the Hamburg district court found him guilty of disorderly conduct and sentenced him to three weeks in prison. Alfred Alward had been caught performing a homosexual act with a man in a public toilet. In 1939 he was again charged with sodomy.

In September 1941, a male prostitute identified him in a police photo as one of his former johns. They had first become acquainted in 1936, and ran into each other four years later in an establishment known to cater to homosexuals.

Alfred Alward was sent to the Holstenglacis remand center on 6 October 1941. On 15 November the district court sentenced him to a nine-month prison term, which he served in the Fuhlsbüttel men’s prison. He was released on 24 August 1942 and remanded into the custody of the Hamburg police, criminal investigation division. They transferred him to the Neuengamme Concentration Camp, where he died on 15 December 1942.

His last residence was at Bahrenfelder Straße 128.
