Grigor Gonsarenko was born in Kursk on May 7, 1905, the son of Vasil and Tatyana Gonsarenko. He was married to Evgena, née Junitska. They lived in the "town of Gonodoss Krs. Chernihofkai, Pzovesia 4". The whereabouts of his parents are unknown. Deported from his native Russia to Hamburg-Langenhorn, he had to perform forced labor for the Hanseatische Kettenwerk GmbH (HAK) as an "Eastern worker" and was housed in the Tannenkoppel camp.

On October 5, 1943, he was admitted to the Langenhorn General Hospital with a diagnosis of "stomach disease." Twelve days later, Grigor Gonsarenko died at 0:30 a.m. on October 17, 1943, in the "Langenhorn Auxiliary Hospital," i.e., in one of the six so-called foreigners' barracks.

ln the death notice of the hospital the cause of death is given as "Ulcus perforatus ventriculi [perforated stomach ulcer] heart and circulatory weakness" and as the signing physician Dr. Blumenthal. Grigor Gonsarenko was 38 years old.

Six days later, his burial by the Schröder Funeral Society took place at 9:30 a.m. on October 23, 1943, at Ohlsdorf Cemetery. He was placed in a collective grave with nine unknown dead, grave location Bp 73, row 3, no. 5. A gravestone slab with his name carved on it and his date of birth and death still commemorates him there.
