Marija Tschechanowitsch, born on 7.7.1920 in Wowji (Vonji), Russia, died on 12.9.1943 in Hamburg

Langenhorner Chaussee next to 625, memorial place

On July 7, 1920, Marija Tschechanowitsch was born in Wowji. She was the daughter of Anna and Pavel Chechanovich, single and of Greek Catholic faith. Deported from her native Russia to Hamburg-Langenhorn, Marija Tschechanowitsch had to perform forced labor for the Hanseatische Kettenwerk GmbH (HAK) and was housed there in the camp.

On June 23, 1943, she was admitted to the Langenhorn Hospital with a diagnosis of pleurisy. Two and a half months later, Marija Tschechanowitsch died at 1:30 p.m. on September 12, 1943, in the "Hilfskrankenhaus Langenhorn," i.e., in one of the six so-called foreigners' barracks.

In the hospital's obituary, the cause of death is listed as "laryngeal and pulmonary tuberculosis, cardiovascular insufficiency," and Dr. Blumenthal is listed as the physician who signed the death certificate.

Marija Tschechanowitsch was 23 years old.

Three days later, her funeral was held by the Schröder funeral company on September 15, 1943 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ohlsdorf cemetery, grave location Bp 73, row 2, no. 7. A tombstone slab with her name carved on it and her date of birth and death still commemorates her there today.
