Ella Marcus, born on 5 Sept. 1874 in Güstrow, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz, deported further on 15 Sept. 1942 to Chelmno

The maiden name of Sara Marcus, Ella Marcus’ mother, was Mendel. The father was Semmy Marcus. Ella Marcus worked as a domestic help. She lived with her respective Jewish employers and had to change her position frequently when employers could no longer afford a domestic.

According to the Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) card file, she resided in the following streets: Oderfelder Strasse, Badestrasse, Jungfrauental, Haynstrasse 7 with Martiensen, and in the very end at Isestrasse 69 with Chassel. Ella Marcus lived on a modest income, moreover using part of it to support her ill sister Paula Marcus, who was a subtenant with Harrison at Sierichstrasse 132. On 25 Oct. 1941, Ella Marcus was deported to Lodz, where she was assigned to quarters at Hohensteiner Strasse 43/45. In Sept. 1942, the ghetto was combed for persons not working. During the one-week raid, a curfew was in effect, which meant no food rations could be distributed. The SS planned to transport an additional 20,000 occupants of the ghetto to the extermination camp in Chelmno. Ella Marcus, 68 years old, also became a victim of this operation. She was deported to Chelmno on 15 September and murdered there.
