Valeska Hertz, born on 11 July 1873 in Hamburg, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz, date of death 29 Apr. 1942
Valeska Hertz was a self-employed businesswoman, who had a hosiery store. In addition, she owned a property on Davidstrasse, which she was forced to sell in Feb. 1939 in the course of "Aryanization.”
Since it was encumbered with mortgages, which the purchaser had to assume, after all expenses were calculated, she received a mere 980 RM (reichsmark) for a piece of real estate whose purchasing price, estimated at the low end, was 40,000 RM.
Likewise, she had to give up her store, whose revenues had covered her living expenses until then. For the business, too, she received so little that she did not even have to pay any "levy on Jewish assets” ("Judenvermögensabgabe”) and no "security order” ("Sicherheitsanordnung”) was issued.
Even though she was 69 years old, she was already put on the first eastbound transport.
In the Lodz Ghetto, she lived for another half year. She died on 29 Apr. 1942, just before the large-scale "resettlement operation” ("Aussiedlungsaktion”) to Chelmno in the first half of May 1942.
