Lina Wolff, born on 17 Dec. 1892, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz

Richard-Dehmel-Strasse 1

Lina Wolff was listed by name on the main transport list among the 1,000 Jews from Hamburg scheduled for the deportation on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz or, respectively, "Litzmannstadt,” as it was called in German: "No. 982 Lina Wolff, born on 17 Dec. 1892 in Pinne, Posen, maid, Richard Dehmelstrasse 1 with Hess."

She was born on 17 Dec. 1892 as the daughter of Samuel and Bertha Wolff, née Leiser, in Pinne (today Pniewy in Poland). She remained unmarried. In Hamburg, she worked as a domestic servant, living with her employers as well. She worked for well-to-do families on Haynstrasse in Eppendorf and on Isestrasse in Harvestehude.

Only one year before her deportation, Lina Wolff was registered as a member of the Jewish Community, without being assessed for tax payments. Probably she joined the Jewish Religious Organization (Jüdischer Religionsverband) only after Apr. 1939 under compulsion, when all persons classified as Jewish had to become members of the Reich Association of Jews in Germany (Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland).

Her last job and at the same time her last place of residence was at Richard-Dehmel-Strasse 1 in Blankenese. She managed the household there for Irene Hess (see corresponding biography), who after the death of her husband, the lawyer Anton Moritz Hess, had moved with her sons Heinrich and Peter to her acquaintance Ida Dehmel residing at Richard-Dehmel-Strasse. Lina Wolff witnessed her female employer and her son Peter, who had remained in Hamburg, fail in their effort to emigrate. For her, a penniless domestic servant, emigration was surely illusory. Eventually, she received the "evacuation order.” Nine months before the transport of Irene and Peter Hess, she was sent to the Lodz Ghetto.

On 1 Jan. 1942, the "departure document” recorded her "resettlement” – a code term for the deportation to the nearby Chelmno extermination camp, where Lina Wolff was murdered using gas.
