Abraham Borensztejn had Polish citizenship and was expelled to Zbaszyn in the province Opole with thousands of other Polish Jews on 28 Oct. 1938.
A milliner, Abraham Borenstzejn was born on 13 Mar. 1892 in Warsaw. It is not known when he came to Germany and when he got married. His wife was an "Aryan.” Their son was born on 17 Oct. 1925 in Hamburg.
When Abraham Borensztejn was ordered by the Hamburg Police Department (Polizeibehörde) to leave the German Reich immediately, his wife and son had to remain in Hamburg. Some people who had been forced to leave the country returned illegally; others obtained permission to travel to their hometowns for a limited period of time to wind up business matters. In this way, Abraham Borensztejn returned to Hamburg and tried to bring about the family’s emigration. In the summer of 1939, the certificate of good standing (Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung) was issued. He had already prepared the list of items to be moved. But when the war began in September 1939 with Germany attacking Poland, all Polish Jews were taken into "protective custody” ("Schutzhaft”) and sent to concentration camps. Because of the particularly harsh conditions of their imprisonment, their mortality rate was significantly higher than that of German inmates. Abraham Borensztejn was first in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp and was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp in 1940. He was murdered there on 15 May 1941. Two so-called suicide photos of him exist, taken by the SS. They show him shot and lying in the field of the "plantation” in Dachau.
