Anni Dettmann, née Bielefeld, born on 6 May 1907 in Hamburg, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz, deported further on 6 Apr. 1942 to Chelmno

Hegestrasse 1

Anni Dettmann was the daughter of the married Jewish couple Hermann and Bertha Bielefeld, née Jacobsohn, from Hamburg. She was a laborer, with various sources describing her as a packer. She had two daughters: Helga Bielefeld (born on 31 May 1927) from a relationship with the Hamburg Jew Gerhard Meyer, and Sigrid Dettmann (born on 5 June 1931) from the marriage with the non-Jewish Gustav Dettmann. This marriage was divorced. The financial circumstances seem to have been difficult. Even after the birth of the daughters and the marriage, Anni Dettmann continued to live at Hegestrasse 1, raised ground floor, with her mother, who was widowed by then.

One room was sublet to Paula Knopf (see corresponding entry). Like her mother, Anni Dettmann had also been exempted several times from paying Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) to the Community. Anni’s daughters were raised in the Paulinenstift, the Jewish orphanage for girls located at Laufgraben 37, which also admitted half-orphans and children from socially underprivileged Jewish families. This home, like the orphanage for boys at Papendamm 3, served as a "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) as of late 1941.

The mother and her daughters were subjected to the deportation, initially to the Lodz/Litzmannstadt Ghetto, together on 25 Oct. 1941.

According to the registration form of the ghetto, Anni Dettmann was ordered to live, together with nine other people, in two rooms (without kitchen) at Blattbinderstrasse 12 on 3 Nov. 1941. We do not know whether the daughters and Paula Knopf, their fellow occupant from Hegestrasse deported to Lodz along with them, lived there as well. Another document from Lodz still exists: According to this, Anni Dettmann was "expelled” on 7 Apr. 1942, i.e. she was transported to Chelmno to be murdered.

Helga and Sigrid were also murdered, and Paula Knopf died in Lodz on 12 Jan. 1942.
