Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital

In the former Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital, the National Socialists implemented their "euthanasia program" from the early 1940s.
Hildegard Thevs was able to research 33 names of murdered children.

A plaque on the building has commemorated the more than 50 murdered babies and children since 1999:

In this building
between 1941 and 1945
more than 50 handicapped children were killed.
An expert committee classified them
as "unworthy life" and assigned them
to be killed in specialized children's wards.
The Hamburg health administration
was involved in this.
Hamburg medical officers supervised
the admission and killing of the children.
Doctors of the children's hospital
carried them out.
None of those involved
was prosecuted for this.

Jürgen Dobbert, born on 12 May 1942 in Boizenburg/Elbe, murdered on 6 Mar. 1943

On 6 Mar. 1943 the student nurse Charlotte Petersen reported to the ward nurse that Jürgen, who in the early morning had drunk well, around 10 a.m. at least poorly, no longer took anything by 2 p.m. She believed that he ought to be assisted with drinking but her superior decided "not to torment” the infant, also not taking any other measures to alleviate Jürgen’s actual agony connected to the diagnostics and the administration of the fatal injection and its effects.

Jürgen was born on 12 May 1942 in Boizenburg on the Elbe River. His parents both belonged to the Lutheran Church and had their son baptized. Apparently, soon after his birth he suffered from convulsions and did not react to his environment, as a result of which he was reported to the "Reich Committee” ["for the Scientific Registering of Serious Hereditary and Congenital Illnesses”] ("Reichsausschuss” ["zur wissenschaftlichen Erfassung von erb- und anlagebedingten schweren Leiden”]). Since no monitoring ward existed for him in Boizenburg, he was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Rothenburgsort, and was admitted to Infant Ward II, where Lotte Albers served as a ward physician (Stationsärztin). He was considered "idiotic” ("idiotisch”) but otherwise healthy. Shortly before he stopped drinking and, around 4:30 p.m. breathing as well, the "authorization for treatment” (= killing) had arrived from the "Reich Committee,” upon which the ward physician or her deputy and the ward nurse administered the Phenobarbital (Luminal) injection to him during the lunch break, when they believed they were alone in the ward. His sudden death surprised the student nurse Charlotte Petersen, who at that time did not yet know anything about the "Reich Committee.”

Jürgen’s mother received notification that her son had died of "convulsions and pneumonia.” She gave notice of his death at the Rothenburgsort records office. Probably she took her son home for burial. Jürgen Dobbert reached the age of ten months.

In the course of the investigations against Bayer and Knigge [the heads of the Rothenburgsort Children’s Hospital and the Heil- und Pflegeanstalt Hamburg-Langenhorn, respectively], the investigators of the British Military Administration asked whether the dying of the children entailed agonies. The physicians negated this. Jürgen had to agonize for hours before death occurred.
