In the 1930s, Martin Garbarz’s family lived in the Saxon town of Limbach. His mother Sonja, who had got divorced from her first husband, Ruben Garbarz, resided there with Martin’s non-Jewish stepfather, Adolf Adloff, and his sister Regina, born in 1915 in Ostrow (Poland). In 1935, Martin began a baker’s apprenticeship in Limbach, which he was forced to give up, however, after a year and a half on the orders of the authorities.

Probably in 1939, at the age of nearly 19, he came to Hamburg, where he lived from 21 Sept. 1939 onward with Jacobs at Brennerstrasse 8, working as a messenger. He was stateless and his religious denomination was Catholic, something that did not spare him, however, the fate of being deported on the mass transport of 8 Nov. 1941 along with 968 Jewish men and women from Hamburg to Minsk, where all traces of him disappear. The other family members survived the period of persecution and continued to stay in Limbach until 1948, then emigrating to Great Britain from there.
