Schäferkampsallee 25/27

Sophie Rosenstein, a native of Hamburg, became a teacher. She did not marry, for at that time only unmarried women were allowed to teach in the school system. Her parents were Isaak and Hanne Rosenstein, née Lisser.

Sophie Rosenstein completed her training in Hamburg and started her teaching career on 1 Apr. 1886. On 1 Apr. 1927, she was retired. She was a member of the "Association of Hamburg Female Elementary Teachers” ("Verein Hamburger Volksschullehrerinnen”). The Hamburg teachers’ directory reveals that she worked at Ausschlägerweg 13. Before 1909, she resided at Carolinenstrasse 24, house no. 3 on the second floor; in 1909, she moved to Wrangelstrasse 63 on the ground floor; and in 1918 to Goebenstrasse 46 on the third floor. Goebenstrasse was perhaps the last residence of her choosing. Other addresses listed on her tax card of the German-Israelitic Community are Suhrenkamp 29 on the second floor, Rothenbaumchaussee 183 on the second floor, and Innocentiastrasse 21 (with Landmann). From there, she was eventually forced to move to Schäferkampsallee 27.

As early as 1923, an entry in her Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) file card indicated, "ailing and supporting her sister.” At least during the last years of her life, she lived together with her sister Paula. Together with her, she was also deported to Theresienstadt.

Sophie Rosenstein was an elderly woman aged 77 years when she was "evacuated.” She already died two and a half months later, on 1 Oct. 1942. The death notice indicated as causes of death a glandular growth and sepsis. Her sister Paula died in Theresienstadt on 17 Sept. 1942.

Sophie Rosenstein had a namesake who was deported to Theresienstadt on the same transport. In the very end, she had lived in the "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Bundesstrasse 35b: Born on 24 Dec. 1866 as Sophie Sommer, she died in Theresienstadt on 8 Dec. 1942. Married to Philipp Rosenstein, a native of Leer, she was deported together with him. Philipp died on 12 Nov. 1942. The couple had at least three children: Salomon (born in 1893), Ivan (born in 1896), and Albert (born in 1900).
