"Widow without religion” a remark in Nathalie Buchbinder’s death notice at the Theresienstadt Ghetto stated. Her atheism, however, had not saved her from being registered, persecuted and deported on account of her Jewish origin. Nathalie Buchbinder was born on January 26th, 1862 (according to the entry on her culture tax card at the Jewish Community) in Radwanitz (Radwanowice/Chrzanow) in Galicia as the daughter of Emanuel Neumann and his wife Caroline, née Löw. Natalie was a citizen of Czechoslovakia. She married Leopold Buchbinder; the couple had no children. Presumably in 1933, she moved to a house built in the mid-1920s in Gottorpstrasse 31 in Altona-Othmarschen; her husband was then deceased, the Altona Address Book listed her as a widow. From June 5th, 1939, persons of Jewish origin had to have themselves registered as compulsory members of Teich Association of Jews in Germany. Thus, a culture tax card for Natalie Buchbinder was opened at the Jewish Religious Association in Hamburg that worked as a branch of the Reich association. At the registry, she was classified as "faithless.” On July 19th, 1942, Natalie Buchbinder was transported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto in occupied Czechoslovakia, on a transport with a total of 803 persons. Only 93 of them were to survive.

Together with Natalie, her sister Sidonie Leicht, née Neumann, two years her junior, had to board the train bound for the ghetto. They arrived in Theresienstadt on July 20th. Natalie Buchbinder was assigned to the "Old Fortress”, building A 2, room 20. This so-called Jägerkaserne ("Hunter Barracks”) was used as quarters for old people, as quarantine ward and for the disinfection and "disinfestation” of personal effects. The 80-year-old Natalie Buchbinder did not survive the winter full of deprivation; she died the same year. The attending doctor recorded the date and the hour of her death: December 5th, 5:00 p.m. As cause of death, he gave "infirmity” and "marasmus senilis”, indicating malnutrition. Her sister Sidonie Leicht died in the Ghetto one month later, on January 2nd, 1943.
