Karoline Kammrath, née Landau, born on 11 July 1875 in Frankfurt/Main, deported on 5 May 1943 to Theresienstadt, deported further to Auschwitz on 15 May 1943

Nordschleswiger Strasse 48

Karoline Kammrath’s maiden name was Landau. She was of Jewish descent and a native of Frankfurt/Main. Apparently, she was never a member of the Hamburg Jewish Community, as no Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) file card exists for her and she is not entered in the 1935 membership list of the Community. She was married to the non-Jewish office worker Fritz Wilhelm Kammrath, born in Berlin in 1875; the wedding took place in Hamburg in 1920. In the Hamburg directories of the early 1940s, he is listed as a pensioner with a residential address at Nordschleswiger Strasse 48. By way of her marriage with a non-Jewish man, Karoline Kammrath enjoyed the relative protection of a "privileged mixed marriage” ("privilegierte Mischehe"), i.e., she was allowed to continue living with her husband in their joint apartment, she did not have to wear the "Jews’ star,” and, at least until the beginning of 1945, would have been exempt from deportation. Due to the death of her husband at the end of Mar. 1943, however, she lost that protection and as early as 5 May 1943, she was deported to Theresienstadt on a transport with 51 Hamburg Jewish men and women. Only a few days after her arrival in the ghetto, the authorities sent her on another transport to the Auschwitz extermination camp, from where there was no way back for her anymore.
