Frieda Heinemann, née Eckstein, b. 2.24.1864 in Höchberg, deported to Theresienstadt on 5.5.1943, died there on 6.25.1943

Grindelhof 10

Frieda Heinemann was the wife of the Jewish teacher Joseph Heinemann, who was born on 8 February 1864. He came from Borken in Hesse and had, in the framework of his teacher training, attended the Israelite Preparatory School in Frieda’s hometown, Höchberg.

In 1888, the couple went to Hamburg and Joseph became a teacher at the Talmud Torah School, which was then located on Elbstrasse in the New City. He was primarily responsible for the first three grades and for instruction in writing. Until 1924, that is, also after the transfer of the school to its new building at Grindelhof 30, Joseph Heinemann worked at the school, then left active service, and for a few years afterwards was active as a private teacher at Brahmsallee 24. He died on 14 April 1941 and was buried in the Hamburg-Ohlsdorf Jewish Cemetery.

Frieda Heinemann was still able to move as a sub-lessee to Hochallee 44. Thereafter, she lived briefly at Grindelhof 10. In September 1942, there followed the coerced move into the "Jew house” at Schäferkampsallee 25. She was deported from there on 5 May 1943 to Theresienstadt, where she died on 25 June 1943. The cause of death was given as enteritis, inflammation of the bowel.
