Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital

In the former Rothenburgsort Children's Hospital, the National Socialists implemented their "euthanasia program" from the early 1940s.
Hildegard Thevs was able to research 33 names of murdered children.

A plaque on the building has commemorated the more than 50 murdered babies and children since 1999:

Uta Konrad (Ute Conrad), born 19 Oct. 1940 in Hamburg-Wandsbek, murdered 28 Aug. 1943

Uta Konrad was born on 19 October 1940. Her developmental disorders only gradually became apparent. She was probably admitted to the Rothenburgsort Children’s Hospital in December 1941, at the age of fourteen months.

"One day I was in the hallway in Ward S1, and the ward physician, Dr. Sonnemann, was speaking to a woman. I saw how the woman fell against the wall and slid to the floor during the conversation with the doctor. A few weeks later I spoke to this woman, and found out she was Ute Conrad’s mother. She told me that on that day Dr. Sonnemann had told her that her child was mentally inferior – she hadn’t known it until then. After that, all I know is that Ute Conrad died.” The nurse Maria Kersten, who gave this testimony in an investigation in 1948, had worked in Neonatal Ward 1, where the "idiotic” children were placed, five or six to a room.

Uta was sent home in February or March 1942, but her mother brought her back shortly thereafter, because she "couldn’t do anything with her” at home, as the nurse Gertrud Menke testified to the investigating judge.

The "Reich Commission” procedure was initiated. Nothing is known about the time between the initiation of the procedure and the arrival of the "authorization for treatment.” Helene Sonnemann injected Uta with a lethal dose of Luminal (phenobarbital) while Gertrud Menke held the child. Uta Konrad died on the evening of 28 August 1942 at 9:50 p.m., aged one year and ten months. The official cause of death was given as "congenital cerebral underdevelopment and bronchial pneumonia.”

Uta’s father notified the Rothenburgsort registry office of her death.
