Martha Ehrenbaum, born on 6 Feb. 1885 in Tessin, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz, murdered on 10 Sept. 1942 in Chelmno (Kulmhof)

Paulinenstrasse 16

Martha Ehrenbaum was born as the daughter of Adalbert and Ida Ehrenbaum, née Scholl, in Tessin near Rostock on 6 Feb. 1885. We have found little information about her life. Ultimately, only the [Jewish religious] tax file card the Jewish Community started on her in 1940 provides a few basic data. She was listed there as "sales assistant,” though evidently earning no income of her own and thus not paying any taxes to the Community. She was single and childless and by May 1939 at the latest, when residential addresses were recorded in the course of the census, lived at Paulinenstrasse 16 on the fourth floor as a subtenant of Harry Arronge.

According to data from the census of 1939, Martha Ehrenbaum was a "full Jew” ("Volljüdin”), with the tax file card noting "Protest.” ("ev.”). It is not known when she converted to the Christian faith. For the transport to Lodz, scheduled to leave Hamburg on 25 Oct., she "volunteered” according to the information on the transport list. Her motives for this step are not discernible. Martha Ehrenbaum lived for nearly another year in the "Litzmannstadt” (Lodz) Ghetto, before being transported to the Chelmno (Kulmhof) extermination camp, located approx. 70 kilometers (43.5 mi.) away, on 10 Sept. 1942 and murdered there. In Sept. 1942 alone, 15,685 persons were deported to this camp.
