Eppendorfer Weg 88
Alfred Funke and Johanna Königsberger were married on 14 July 1938. Soon after the wedding, probably following the November Pogrom of 1938, Alfred Funke was interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. At the end of Dec., he apparently returned to Hamburg. According to the Jewish religious tax (Kultussteuer) file card, Alfred Funke was employed as a warehouse worker with the Wagner Company on Elbstrasse.
Since 1927, he was listed in the card file of the German-Israelitic Community and paid Jewish religious tax. The tax card indicates as addresses, prior to Eppendorfer Weg, Ebertallee 122, Horst-Wessel-Allee 178, and Augustenburgerstrasse 29. In the directory, one can trace these addresses under the entry of Alexander Funke and, respectively, A. Funke, retiree. Probably Alexander Funke was Alfred’s father. All of the places of residence were located in Altona, which belonged to Hamburg only since the Greater Hamburg Act (Gross-Hamburg-Gesetz) of 1937. Ebertallee had been renamed Horst-Wessel-Allee as early as 30 Mar. 1933. The addresses likely no longer of their free choosing were Dillstrasse 19 and Rappstrasse 16 (with Bähr), from where the married couple was deported to Minsk.
The parents of Johanna Funke were Berta and Rudolf Königsberger. Her sister Elsie survived and later lived in California.
