Hermann Josephy, born on 2 Mar. 1869, deported on 15 July 1942 to Theresienstadt, date of death there 8 Sept. 1942

The pensioner, formerly having worked as a self-employed commercial agent, lived with his wife in a childless marriage. Both partners to the marriage owned a small fortune, which was put under "security order” (Sicherungsanordnung). With reference to their age of over 70 years, they sought permission for each of them to be solely authorized to dispose of 400 RM (reichsmark), the sum allocated to them per month, a request they were granted.

A Jewish domestic help cared for the couple but she was deported on 1 Dec. 1941. They were unable to find a replacement, thus being left to their own devices from then on.

On orders of the housing department, they were forced to make two rooms of their apartment at Schlüterstrasse 14 available to subtenants. In Apr. 1942, the couple had to move to the "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Bundesstrasse 43. At this point, the sum they were allowed to dispose of to cover living expenses was reduced to 300 RM: The room in which they now lived together cost 50 RM a month.

From this last address, the couple was deported to Theresienstadt on 15 July 1942. There they lived in Building L 425, an overcrowded small structure on Hauptstrasse. Ida Josephy was on the list for further transport to Minsk on 21 Sept. 1942. She was murdered there.

Hermann Josephy, whom the attending physician in Theresienstadt diagnosed with a heart defect, died in the Theresienstadt Ghetto on 8 Aug. 1942. The death notice indicates "cardiac insufficiency” as the cause of death.
