Isestraße 94

Martha Weinstein and her husband, Bernhard (b. 1868), joined the Jewish Congregation in Hamburg in October 1937; they lived at Isestrasse 94. They came from Jever, where the family most likely earned its living from cattle dealing; their oldest son Alfred, as well as Bernhard’s brother, reported cattle dealer as their occupation.

Both sons, Alfred (b. 1900), the father of a son since 1928, and Paul (b. 1902) were able to emigrate. Alfred was in England by 1937 at the latest.

It was planned to have their parents follow them. To this end Paul placed 10,000 RM with the Chemnitz foreign currency office, which on 1 July 1939 was put under "security order.” With the justification that Bernhard Weinstein suffered severely from heart disease, the couple petitioned to have separate accounts on the basis that the accumulating medical bills would be better paid. by this arrangement. 300 RM per month were awarded to Bernhard and Martha Weinstein for living expenses.

In August 1939, they embarked on a convalescence trip for which the approved money had been approved. On 17 January 1940, the "security order” for the costs of emigration was partially reduced, however on 11 March, Bernhard Weinstein died just before his 72nd birthday.

A month later, Hugo and Rosa Weinstein moved in with their sister-in-law in Hamburg. Hugo Weinstein had a small piece of property in Jever which he sold. The proceeds were placed in a blocked account in Jever. Only in November 1940 were Hugo and Rosa Weinstein able to transfer some of their few assets to Hamburg and received a tax allowance. In April, Martha Weinstein applied to the Office of the Chief Financial Governor not to restrict her access to the funds because her brother-in-law and his wife were dependent on care from her household.

The last we hear of Martha Weinstein was in September 1940 when she applied for an increase to cover the costs of a trip from her account in order to see relatives in Chemnitz.

The three Weinsteins lived together on Isestrasse a little longer than two years, until they had to go to their deaths in Riga.

A small consolation it might have been for the Weinsteins, that four pages of memory were placed in Yad Vashem. In 1955, pages were established for Hugo and Rosa by their nephew. Then in 1974, a niece established a page for Martha Weinstein. Finally, in 1978, their daughter-in-law Meta in London established a page.

At Isestrasse 94, lived the sisters Selma and Paula Danziger also as sub-lessees of Berthold Bucki, who was deported to Minsk on 8 November 1941. The sisters were murdered in Riga. Their commemorative stones are at Hohe Bleichen 51, the center of thei existences.
