Josef Landau was originally from Frankfurt am Main. His parents were Nathan and Hannchen, née Schönfeld. His wife Lea was from Hamburg, where her father Jacob Hasenberg had a restaurant. Her mother was Jeanette, née Josias. The family lived at Alsterarkaden 12.

Josef Landau and Lea Hasenberg married on New Year’s Day 1917. At that time, Josef Landau lived in Worms, and Lea lived with her parents at Bundesstraße 35, Haus 13. On the marriage license Josef Landau was listed as a manager, in later records he was listed as an office worker. Their daughter Irma was born on 9 Feb. 1920. Josef Landau became a member of the Hamburg Jewish Community on 15 May 1922. In 1927 he became unemployed. His tax records with the Jewish Community note that in 1941 he was employed as a casket bearer.

Irma Landau apparently began a commercial apprenticeship in 1935. She lived with her parents at Großneumarkt 56 in a building that would later become a "Jews house.” When the deportations began, she was the first in her family to receive deportation orders, on 6 December 1941. She was deported to Riga, and all trace of her was lost after she arrived in Jungerfernhof. Her parents were deported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto, because of their age, on 19 July 1942. Josef Landau died three weeks after their arrival. A Jewish doctor gave the cause of death as "heart failure.” Lea Landau was transferred to Auschwitz on 23 January 1943 and murdered there.
