Klawa Schurawel, born on 4.1.1944 in Hamburg, died on 13.2.1945

Essener Street 54 (formerly camp Tannenkoppel, Weg 4, also called "Tarpenbek = Forced labor camp of the armaments industry in Hamburg Langenhorn)

Klawa Schurawel was born in Hamburg on January 4, 1944. Her parents, Vera Schurawel, born on October 10, 1922 in Ukraine, and Iwan Schurawel, born on January 14, 1923 in Maija/Djeperprotowsk, Ukraine, were of Greek Catholic faith. Deported from their homeland, both had to perform forced labor in Hamburg-Langenhorn for the Hanseatische Kettenwerk GmbH (HAK). They were housed separately in the women's and men's camps of the "Ostarbeiterlager Tannenkoppel", Weg 4.

On the day her child was born, Vera Schurawel was admitted to the Alsterdorf hospital. Nine days after giving birth, on January 13, 1944, she returned to the "Tannenkoppel Eastern Workers' Camp" with her daughter Klawa. There Klawa had to spend the short time of her life. The nutritional and living conditions were completely inadequate for her.

A year later, she died in the Eppendorf University Hospital at 11:15 p.m. on February 13, 1945. In the hospital's obituary, doctor Debes had given "laryngeal diphtheria" as the cause of death.

Klawa was 1 year, 1 month, and 9 days old.

Ten days after her death, she was buried on February 23, 1945, in the Ohlsdorf cemetery, grave location: Bo 63, row 32, no. 1. At the end of 1959, the grave was levelled together with at least 30 graves of the children of forced laborers in area Bo 63. Only for three graves the mortal remains were moved to the area Bp 74 and for five other graves to the area Z 35. Klawa's mortal remains were moved to the collective grave Bp 74, R. 2, No. 36 on September 7, 1959. Her name is not found on the gravestone there. There is only the name of Petro Rudiuk, born in 1924, with his birth and death dates.

Klawa's father Iwan Schurawel fell ill a few months after Klawa's death and was hospitalized in the Langenhorn Hospital from June 29 to July 18, 1944. The further fate of her parents is not known.
