Paula Berkitz, née Popert, born on 3 Feb. 1879 in Hamburg-Bergedorf, deported on 18 Nov. 1941 to Minsk

Paula Berkitz was born the daughter of Mendel and Friederike Popert in Hamburg-Bergedorf. Her husband Moritz Berkitz, born in 1886, was from Upper Silesia. Both joined the Jewish Community in 1905. They had no children.

Moritz Berkitz ran a business for yard goods at the corner of Hamburger Straße and Heitmannstraße. He owned the property.

The married couple initially lived in Barmbecker Straße, then moved to Isestraße, and from there probably in 1935 to Oderfelder Straße. This is the address listed in the 1936 directory.

Moritz Berkitz died in Nov. 1938. Immediately following his death, the estate was put under "security order” ("Sicherheitsanordnung”). The property had probably been sold after the revocation of the commercial license and the "Aryanization” of the company. Until Moritz Berkitz died, the couple was allowed to dispose of a mere 500 RM (reichsmark) per month.

Paula Berkitz was allowed to stay in Oderfelder Straße. She had to accommodate a female Jewish subtenant, though she was permitted to continue employing her domestic.

Since her husband’s last will was void due to a formal error, Paula Berkitz had to deal with relatives of her husband in Silesia. The costs of passage for their emigration were approved by the Chief Finance Administration (Oberfinanzdirektion), and so was a modest monthly pension for her husband’s sisters.

In the summer of 1941, Paula Berkitz still managed to go to a health resort. The deportation order to Minsk reached her on 18 Nov. 1941 at her own apartment.
