Clara, called Claire, Deutsch, née Scheroschewsky, born on 29 June 1883 in Breslau, deported on 25 Oct. 1941 to Lodz

Claire Deutsch was a native of Breslau (today Wroclaw in Poland). Together with her husband, the merchant Oswald Deutsch, she belonged to the Jewish Community in Hamburg, probably since 1924. The couple did not have any children. From 1927/28 onward, Claire Deutsch had to pay practically no Jewish religious taxes (Kultussteuern) any longer, so that one can assume that her husband died that year.

In Sept. 1938, when she was still living on Flemingstrasse, she made enquiries about immigration conditions to Palestine. As a result of this, her financial circumstances were checked. However, her property proved to be so insubstantial that no "Reich Flight Tax” ("Reichsfluchtsteuer”) was levied.

After her plans to emigrate had apparently failed, Claire Deutsch moved to Isestrasse 5 as a subtenant in June 1939. From there she was deported to Lodz on 25 Oct. 1941, with her "address” in the ghetto indicated as Rauchgasse. However, one must not imagine the accommodation as "normal” residential quarters. The deportees were herded together in cramped surroundings and had no privacy left. They had to make do with meager food rations but were forced to perform hard labor nevertheless. The employment indicated for Claire Deutsch was office worker.

The date of her death is 25 Feb. 1942. That month, 1,875 occupants of the ghetto perished. They were not able to cope with the strains during that extremely cold winter. We do not know whether Claire Deutsch was among their number or whether she was "resettled” to Chelmno and murdered using gas.
