Alexander Blankenstein, a native of Frankfurt/Main, had lived in Hamburg since 1911, and from May 1934 onward, together with his wife, in a one-and-a-half-bedroom apartment at Sechslingspforte 5. He was a typesetter by occupation, working in Hamburg’s graphic arts industry from 1924 to 1933. In 1933, he became unemployed and together with his wife depended on welfare assistance until their deportation in 1941.
From 1903 to 1911, Lea Blankenstein attended elementary school (Volksschule) in her native town in Galicia, where she worked at her father’s lumber company until 1913. That same year she moved to Hamburg, where she was initially employed at ADEST textile wholesalers in Altona. According to details provided by her surviving siblings, she started up her own business in 1916 doing installment transactions for textiles in Altona, though relocating to Kiel in 1921. In 1926, she married Alexander and initially moved with her husband to an apartment on Schmilinskystraße. At this location, she also apparently continued to operate her textiles trade, giving it up, however, after the move to Sechslingspforte at the latest. On 25 Oct. 1941, the couple was deported to Lodz by train on the mass transport comprised of 1034 Hamburg Jews. Stumbling Stones for Alexander and Lea Blankenstein are located at the part of Sechslingspforte, that belongs to Hohenfelde.
