Grindelweg 4a

Anna Blumenthal, née Metz, was born in Hamburg on 10 Aug. 1876. She was married to Julius Blumenthal (1855–1942); together they had a son, Erwin (born in Hamburg on 5 Mar. 1911), who later succeeded in fleeing to Switzerland. Children from Julius Blumenthal’s first marriage to Mathilde Polack were the twins Elsa and Meta Blumenthal (20 Mar. 1882), also born in Hamburg. There is evidence that Julius Blumenthal had already been living at Grindelweg 4a since 1913.

On 25 Oct. 1941, Elsa and Meta Blumenthal were displaced to Lodz on the first deportation train leaving Hamburg eastbound. Elsa died there of inhuman living conditions on 25 Mar. 1942. Following the death of her sister, Meta was deported further to an unknown place and murdered. The Memorial Book of the Federal Archives provides 25 Apr. 1942 as the date of death.

After the death of her husband on 13 Jan. 1942, Anna Blumenthal lived at Kleine Schäferkamp 32 on the fourth floor until her deportation. On 15 July 1942, she was deported together with nearly 1,000 other Jewish residents of Hamburg to Theresienstadt, from where she was displaced to Minsk [Note: to Treblinka, as we know today] on 21 Sept. 1942 and murdered there.
