Just when exactly Gertrud Blut came from Upper Silesia to Hamburg and what her life was like here until 1935 we do not know. In that year, her name appears for the first time recorded in the files of the Jewish Community. The names entered for her parents are Arnold and Paula Blut, née Klemann. Her occupation is listed as actress, her stage name as Gerda Clemens. The deportation list dated 18 Nov. 1941 indicates seamstress as her occupation. Prior to the forced quartering in the "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Haynstraße 7 on 11 Nov. 1940, she lived at Hansastraße 82 III, and before that at Heinrich-Barth-Straße 10 II. She was unmarried.

On 31 Oct. 1941, i.e. shortly before her deportation, she had been taken into "protective custody” ("Schutzhaft”) and transported to the Stadthaus, the headquarters of the Hamburg Gestapo located at the Stadthaus Bridge (Stadthausbrücke). On 5 Nov. 1941, she was released again, but already arrested a second time after 13 days and displaced together with 406 other persons to the Minsk Ghetto, the destination of the second deportation train from Hamburg. The German Wehrmacht had already occupied Minsk, the capital of the Soviet Republic of Belarus at the time, only a few days after the German armed forces had invaded the Soviet Union at the end of June 1941. Immediately, SS units began driving more than 100,000 Belarusian Jews into a ghetto, beating tens of thousands of them to death or shooting them to make room for victims from the territory of the German Reich. Of the 7,000 German Jews deported there, only few survived the hunger, cold, forced labor, and the massacres.
