Ernst and Marie Fiering were members of the KPD (German Communist Party) and of the underground resistance group Bästlein-Jacob-Abshagen, which was organized in the early 1940s. Ernst Fiering was an electrician at the Stülcken shipyard. There he and Franz Reetz put together a resistance group which was in contact to forced laborers from Eastern Europe. After a large part of the Bästlein-Jacob-Abshagen organization was broken up by the Gestapo in the fall of 1942, some of those who had not been arrested, including the Fierings, continued their resistance activities until their arrests about one year later. They received no trial, and Ernst and Marie Fiering, together with 69 other men and women who were involved in the political resistance, were hanged two weeks before the end of the war in the Neuengamme Concentration Camp. In February 2003, the first Stolpersteine in St. Georg were laid for them in front of the building in which they had lived.
